Topic: Are Your Loft Lights On
Well gals and guys, its that time of the year once again to prepare the breeders, for their first clutch of eggs. I usually start the lights three weeks from Feb. 14, 2009, and I also start the medication program. I use a double mix of Emtryl and Altabactine for five days, and continue for an additional five days with just altabactine to complete the program. This winter has been a tough one with lots of snow and extreme temputures with no breaks of warmer weather. The birds are looking fine with silky feathers, full of bloom, and powdery white wattles. This year I tried to focus in keeping the birds from gaining too much weight, because too much weight is unhealthy for both sexes at breeding time. The hen can go egg bound and the cock can be stressed which could cause many other problems.
The stock birds were kept in a different loft while the stock loft has been renovated. Well, with the help of my good friend John Marles, coaching me through the modifications in detail from ceiling to floor, and boy it looks great. To seal the deal, the cocks were introduced, and the rest is history. The next blogs will have picture of the stock loft breeding section and feel free to make comments if you wish.
